The symbol of Pisces is two fish that swim in opposite directions, as can the ideas in the Pisceans mind. Being a water sign they are driven by emotion rather than practical considerations.

The end of the 20th century, and the drawing of the Age of Aquarius, left behind it the Age of Pisces and perhaps the most remarkable period of human history. The beginning of the Age of Pisces coincided with the birth of Jesus Christ, who exemplifies the kind, forgiving and self-sacrificing qualities that are typical Piscean traits. The cloistered lives are often led by Christian monks and nuns, as well as followers of other religions and reflect the tendency of Pisceans to be reclusive. In general, the Age of Pisces was a remarkable, even unimaginable, change. It demonstrates the sign’s traits of strong creativity and an attitude of “whatever will be, will be”. Unfortunately, this can be tempered by a refusal to face reality and a tendency to self-deception. The Age of Pisces made extraordinary advances, but sometimes without due consideration for the damage to the ecosystem and society that such development caused, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries. This should hopefully be counteracted by the more rational intellectualism of the current Age of Aquarius, which will take us through the next 2000 years of human existence.

Key Traits of Pisces

Watery Pisces is the good Samaritan of the Zodiac. Intuitive and vague, they have sympathy to spare, often acting on instinct to relinquish their own desires in favor of achieving greater closeness with others. Sensitive and impressionable, Pisces can be all things to all people. They have a strong empathy for the underdog and are willing to sacrifice their own needs to help others. Followers rather than leaders, vacillate if left to their own devices. They often have a tendency to be shy, though they are more than capable of standing up for themselves if anyone takes advantage of their good nature. Frequently described as the “most watery of the water signs”, Pisceans are rarely grounded in any practical concerns or sense of order. Their thoughts and lives are like a stream that flows along at its own pace and trying to hold them back is as futile as trying to hold back the tide.

Until the discovery of Neptune in 1846, Pisces was ruled by Jupiter and still reflects its optimism, loyalty, and need to see justice done. With the discovery of Neptune, the watery Pisces gained a much more appropriate ruling planet. Ties completely to the element of water, Neptune is the perfect ruler for the watery Pisces and its love of poetry, idealism, and imagination. Pisceans are governed by their emotions and the flow of ideas which is represented by the flow of water and much more than a practical consideration. They can be easily carried away. The associated colour of Pisces is sea green, another tie to its watery links. In fact, water is the theme running through all Pisces’ lucky associations, from the animals used in its Zodiac glyph to the high water-content fruit and vegetables that are its associated foods.

Plants

Typical Piscean fruits are those that have a high water content such as Watermelons or Citrus fruits like Lemons and Limes. Watery salad vegetables like Cucumber and Lettuce are also typical Piscean foods. Typical Piscean trees and flowers are those that grow in water or by the side of lakes and water beds such as Water Lilies. One unusual flower associated with Pisces is the Convulvus, which can grow in dry climates and conditions by drawing water to it. The Willow is often referred to as the Queen of the Waters, and the Alder is the king, giving it particular association with Pisces.

Birthstones

Red and black Bloodstones can often help provide Pisceans with the grounding qualities they need to balance the chaotic flow of their lives. Another Piscean birthstone of Pisces is the Moonstone. Its milky opaqueness reflects the watery associations of the sign, as well as its ties to The Moon of the tarot.

Animals

Reflecting the sign’s watery associations, the fish is also a popular symbol adopted by the early followers of Christianity, Jesus Christ was born on the cusp of the Age of Pisces. Seahorses are the undersea creatures that are often depicted as pulling the Chariot that carries the Sea Gods such as Poseidon or Neptune which are associated with Pisces.

Metals

Piscean metals are soft and malleable, reflecting the fact that it is a mutable sign. Platinum is a soft metal and is often used to make beautiful jewellery. Tin is a malleable metal that can adapt to most tasks.
